Artist Reflection: Responding to this prompt took me a long time because I spent a lot of time thinking about how understanding truly affected me. I worked on this piece and it didn’t feel authentic at first, so I took a break and came back to it days later. I’m drawn to the idea that we can only understand someone’s story if we stop talking and listen. We can’t fix things with our words, but we CAN give space with our ears.

Artist Reflection: I was inspired to make this after noticing the ear in the previous collage and the title Listening. COVID has brought the surprising blessing of reconnecting with friends in far away places and the internet has allowed us to listen and talk as though in the same room. Our conversations and voices are able to transcend the distance and allows me to be there for you, and you for me... When we listen.

Artist Reflection: In the oil pastel, I noticed the ear wrapped around the city skyline, and it made me think of listening to the sounds of the city. Space, on the other hand, is devoid of sound. I knew I wanted to combine my love of music and photography, and I chose to layer the moon with notes from a song that is particularly close to my heart.

Artist Reflection: The photograph of the moon, superimposed with sheet music, felt simultaneously mysterious and calming to me. So I wrote a round that felt mysterious and calming to sing. Sometimes we need to embrace the mystery in order to embrace peace.

Artist Reflection: The moon sang in two languages. Seen from different places. It still shines the same light. Our different perspectives can connect us, and allow us to take in and give off light in darkness. How beautiful to think about this on a bright spring morning!

Note: This chain was started with a submitted community response to the prompt: How have you cared for others or how others have cared for you during these challenging times? The artists did NOT see the reflections written by the previous artist, only the image of the work and the title. The reflections were revealed only when the chain was complete. The six links in the chain are intended to offer a creative way to connect and offset the six feet of physical distance we need to keep from each other in order to care for each other.
