Artist Reflection: My inspiration from the “Soul Connection Through Music” was using music to bring our isolation and lack of human connection into a more harmonious, uplifting place.

Artist Reflection: I was inspired by what looked like a band made of musical notes themselves along the color spectrum that re-started in the middle. I played with the idea of harmony and collaboration in this image and also wove in ideas about individual will –what we are supposed to do versus what we are meant to do. Because of the flow to the image I abandoned my usual stanza construction with its punctuation.

Artist Reflection: I was struck by the feeling of brightness and hope provoked by this poem and immediately had an image of bright colors rising from a fire. In playing with the paper, the bright fire idea turned into a bird, and I was drawn to the image of a bird singing out to anyone who needed to listen, providing comfort in a dark night.

Link 5: Call and Response, original handpan composition submitted by Jeremy Dalnes

Artist Reflection: Looking at the colors interwoven on the image I was given, I imagined two musical lines representing each color. The handpan is a great instrument for creating harmonies and rhythms that tend to ‘just work’ without too much thought about traditional aspects of music composition. I recorded one line and then improvised/overdubbed a second in a ‘dialogue’ of sorts. As we come out of the intensity of 2020, there is a feeling of winter turning into spring so there is a mixture of hope and sadness in this piece.

Artist Reflection: When I received the link, knowing there was still so much to do before I could call my day complete, I hesitated. How many minutes could I spare? What if it made me more anxious? What was in that tiny 3 minute musical box? "Call and Response" ... perhaps it should be retitled "Calm and Response." I felt my breath slow, my mind clear. My eyes closed, and after 3 minutes, I was centered.

Note: This chain was started with a submitted community response to the prompt: How have you cared for others or how others have cared for you during these challenging times? The artists did NOT see the reflections written by the previous artist, only the image of the work and the title. The reflections were revealed only when the chain was complete. The six links in the chain are intended to offer a creative way to connect and offset the six feet of physical distance we need to keep from each other in order to care for each other.
