Link 1 - Reflect, acrylic latex on scrap wood, by Tova Speter

Artist Statement: Reflect plays with the mirror image grain pattern naturally occurring in the wood and explores the similarities and differences in the two sections. It considers the idea that when we reflect, we may not see things exactly as we think we “should” as our perspective is dynamic and constantly shifting. The most meaningful observation in a reflection comes when something (however small) is noticed in the reflected image that may have been overlooked in the “real” view.

Link 3 - Bending the Light, mosaic by Emily Bhargava

Artist Statement: Bending the light explores the idea of near-symmetry, and the disorientation that mirrors can cause. Like a fun house mirror, the reflection is broken and distorted, but whether the piece is right-side up or upside-down, the top and bottom are stable, with the center changing according to the ambient light, what’s being reflected, and the colors nearby.

Artist Statement: I was inspired by the way different pieces of the pendant offer a unique way of seeing what is being reflected. I felt the same enchantment watching the reflection of the trees in a pond in the woods on a windy day. Usually the water is still but that day the wind was creating something new and fascinating. Wind invites the viewer to wonder with me about the unseen parts of what each of us reflects.
