Local Arts Council Projects
Since 2005, Tova has received grants from local cultural councils to help bring public art into the community. The projects have all been designed to engage local youth in brainstorming and painting artwork to contribute to the beauty of their local areas. Two projects have been completed in Somerville, and a new project will take place in Arlington in the Summer of 2007.
In Somerville, two mural projects funded by the Somerville Arts Council, were designed to harness the creative energy of the kids for the enjoyment of everyone walking by their finished work. The youth built confidence and pride as they received feedback from the community and the Mayor about their amazing accomplishments. Students from the JFK Elementary School created an underground-themed mural in a pedestrian walkway under the commuter rail tracks and youth from the Somerville Boys and Girls Club designed a mural reflecting the diversity in Union Square. Dedication ceremonies were held to celebrate the young artists and the city's new public art.
This summer, with support from the Arlington Cultural Council, Tova will work with local at-risk youth in Arlington to design and paint four switchboxes in town to help bring some color to the streets. Stay tuned for more information and pictures of that project...
