"Friendship" 2013

I was honored to be the artist-in-residence at the Ivy Street School in Brookline in the Fall of 2013 as I worked with students with brain injuries and other neurological difficulties. It represents the students ideas about friendship as something fun, supportive, and lasting through sunrise, sunset, and the night. The students hoped to inspire others to think about what friendship means to them. Read below for more from their own words:

Mural Description

Our section is about the fun of friendship and shows people jumping and dancing. Music gets people together and it is fun to get to know each other. We each chose a word about what Friendship means to us and included it in one of the music notes. – Olivia, Ryan, Alanda

Our section represents friendship because it shows two hands making a heart. Giving a high five can be quick, but making a heart together with love at the center shows true friendship. The heart also represents the warmth of the sun and calm as it sets over the ocean. – Carol and Jacqui

Our section represents a community of people connected together in friendship. Their hands are joined even though they’re all different, some tall, others short, some in skirts, others in pants. Even though they’re all different from each other, they can all be kind to each other and that’s what friendship is. The stars contain words that mean friendship to us. – Rachel

I painted the word Friendship in the mural. I painted the letters in bubble style because I like how bold it is and how it pokes out at you. Friendship is very important. It means the feeling of trust you have with someone that allows you to speak to them from the heart. Friendship means that you really want the best for someone and give them perfect advice. Friendship means that you don’t stop someone from becoming the best they can be. Friendship is fun. – Luis
